About the practice
— Folio i.

A small consulting practice, built on trust.

JW1246 Consulting was founded on a simple belief: that the best advice comes from people who are genuinely invested in the outcome — and who don't need to sell you anything else.

We work with established UK businesses at turning points. Growth, transition, turnaround, ownership change — moments when the right advice, delivered well, can make a material difference. Our clients tend to be owner-managed businesses, family firms, and mid-market companies navigating a decision that matters.

We're a small practice by choice. We take on a limited number of engagements at any one time, so that each client receives the attention a serious piece of work deserves. The person you meet at the first conversation is the person who leads the engagement — from beginning to end.

Good advice isn't about having all the answers. It's about asking the right questions, carefully, and being honest about what you find.

Our clients come to us for different reasons. Some need clarity on strategy. Some need help with a specific operational problem. Some need a trusted sounding board for a decision they can't quite name. What unites them is a willingness to look at their business honestly — and to act on what they find.

We don't hold product lines, sell software, or take commissions from anyone. Our only interest is the client in front of us. When we recommend a course of action, it's because we believe it's right — not because it benefits us commercially.

Most of our work comes through personal recommendations. We take that as the highest compliment we can receive.

What we hold to. In six parts.

— Principles
— i.

Independence first

No product lines, no network, no commercial affiliations. Our only stake is the outcome.

— ii.

Senior-led, always

Every engagement is led by the director. The person you meet does the work.

— iii.

Plain English

Advice written as if for a friend. No jargon, no padding, no consultancy theatre.

— iv.

Practicality over theory

Recommendations tested against the reality of the business — not a whiteboard version of it.

— v.

Discretion

Much of what we do involves confidential, sometimes difficult conversations. We hold that work in strict confidence.

— vi.

The long view

We're interested in outcomes that hold, not quick wins that fade. That shapes everything we do.

Leadership

Led by someone still in the work.

Tom founded JW1246 Consulting after two decades working across industry and advisory practice. He set up the firm because he wanted to advise the way he believed it should be done — carefully, independently, and without the noise of a larger organisation.

He remains closely involved in every engagement. That's deliberate. Clients always have a direct line to the person responsible for the quality of the work, and to the person who understands their business.

Under his direction, the practice has stayed deliberately small. We work with a manageable number of clients, keep a small team of trusted associates, and prioritise doing things well over doing things at scale.

Outside of client work, Tom reads widely on strategy, organisational design, and the craft of advising — and is a slightly over-enthusiastic keeper of notebooks.

We're always glad to have an initial conversation — no pitch, no obligation, no pressure. If we're a fit, we'll say so. If we're not, we'll say that too.
